You Set the Expectation
How our bird behaves and the amount of training that we do is entirely personalized to what we want. The expectations I have for my birds, or an individual bird, may not be the same you would have for my birds, or your birds. That’s okay! Only you live with your birds, and only I live with my birds, so if you’re cool with a behavior, even if I am not, then it’s cool the bird does the behavior.
Training is utilized to help an animal be more successful in our care, which is especially important for undomesticated species like parrots as they’re wild animals in an unnatural environment. It’s to help them cope and be successful! If success in your home is a bird that bites, then that is success, despite what anyone else says because it’s your bird, your home, and you’re okay with that. That’s a pretty dramatic example, but it’s 100% true.
My little birds are far less trained than my big birds. My small birds know good basics to keep them successful like target training, station training, syringe training, and step up trained. But, when you look at the lengthy list say Alfie knows, it’s very different. I let Maui scream as much as she wants and don’t really do much to change it because it’s far less quiet than Alfie or Ringo’s scream, who I do train, so my neighbors still like me.
You set the expectation. If you ever need help with training, I have online training sessions serving internationally, as well as in person training for the Maryland and the surrounding states!
