Fluff and Feathers wants to be able to provide products to our clients and supporters that we trust and believe in. Instead of sending clients a long list of links to multiple websites to provide the education, enrichment, and training aids they may need to be successful, often paying so much in shipping; we created an all-in-one shop stop for your training needs.

All of our products are stored and created in an animal and smoke free environment. This is important to us because we want your animal to stay healthy, and for your products to be at their best and safest condition. Getting items from a pet store, especially enrichment that is not packaged, can be an easy way to spread diseases within our parrots. Also, stores have an unknown amount of customers handling products with unwashed hands, possibly dropping them on the floor, or allowing their animal to lightly interact with them and not purchasing. With the pandemic still circulating, as well as the concern for companion health and safety, we keep all our products off-site, and our facility is not open to the public.

Parrot Toy Enrichment

Our enrichment is handmade in the USA by head trainer Melanie Canatella unless stated otherwise in the product description. Our original products were created thoughtfully by a professional trainer with behavioral modification in mind. This means they were not created to be “cute” or “visibly attractive” because parrot enrichment is not made to be decorations. They are to be formulated with interaction and task-completion in mind. Our toys have ample foraging opportunities included, so your bird can have the mental stimulation they crave! Most of our toys have different foraging complexities within the same toy, so as your bird gains skills, the toy can grow with them, allowing you to get your money’s worth out of it! We have all-natural toys, as well as toy’s that contain plastic materials. No bird toy is 100% safe, even if it is made of all natural materials. Ingestion, strangulation, getting caught in a toy, etc. are all real possibilities with every parrot enrichment item on the market, even if it is marketed as “safe.” That is a marketing strategy to falsely gain your trust in company's toys. We are about correct education, not creating false expectations. Our toys are created with safety in mind. We have some toys on stainless steel skewers so there are no ropes. We do not use chain in our products, as they are known to cause beak damage and get nails stuck. When we use cordage, we use a 100% paper cordage that is never longer than 1FT in length, usually when strung through a base it is less than that per side, to decrease your bird getting caught in the toy, as well as being able to bite their way out with the material’s used. We only use stainless steel metals to decrease metal toxicity concerns. We never use cotton or offer fabric toys, as that can cause crop impaction and nails to get stuck. We prefer to use a plastic link closure on our toys so beaks cannot be impaled, but if you do not prefer them, you can always swap them out for a metal option. We also offer for some toys for them to be modified, like bells removed, complementary if you email us through out Contact Page. Otherwise, it is up to you as the caretaker to monitor toy interaction, as well as upkeep on the enrichment item to be sure it is safe for your specific bird to interact with!

Toy Making Parts

Parrot enrichment and foraging opportunities comes in many forms. Some birds prefer for their enrichment to be able to be held in their feet. Though a lot of our extra small parrot enrichment provides that ability depending on the size of your bird, we also want to cater to all parrots. This means we are offering individual bird toy parts for you to pick and choose dependent on what your bird likes. This also means that you can create your own bird toys specifically for your bird with these items. We carry some cordage and stainless steel skewers so you can easily create something your bird will love if you cannot find it in our line.

Education

We provide educational content to the public on a variety of topics. These are generalized education materials that should work and apply to the majority of people and situations. We created this option for a few reasons…

We wanted to provide cost-effective behavioral help and education for the public that cannot afford our private sessions at that time in their life but need help. Our goal is to help caretakers, keep animals in loving homes and out of rescues/shelters, and help animals thrive in captive care. Having information at your fingertips on behaviors, training, and fundamentals that you can apply to your animal in a way that you can afford is important to us. Our private consultations and training sessions online or in-person are the only guaranteed way to have a plan and education catered to you and your specific animal, but these options are a close second option!

If people are looking for a way to train a specific behavior, or manage others, the internet is usually their first step in learning how. The internet including forums, Facebook pages, social media “trainers,” and even some “professionals” will provide “how-to’s” that we have found to rarely be correct, in-depth enough, or missing key factors. It can lead to creating a “trial and error” type learning that is often frustrating, takes longer to achieve the same results, or straight up doesn’t work. Our education was created to combat this. They are created by a behavioralist that has multiple degrees in behavioral modification. The methods are trusted, working with thousands of animals on a variety of species. They are incredibly in-depth utilizing science-based training techniques based on operant conditioning without using force, coercion, positive punishers, and other detrimental training techniques that decrease the relationship between you and your animal, as well as cause mental health decline.

We also know everyone learns differently! Some people want more time with the educational material, be able to take in-depth notes, and view video and pictural examples. A lot of the educational materials provide exactly that kind of learning environment for you to be able to digest and understand the materials effectively to be able to apply to your animal!

The education is immediate. Booking private sessions with a trainer can have you wait days to weeks for an availability depending on the current schedule. When you purchase our education, you are able to view it immediately, and start apply your new education sooner!

It is also generalized information that you can learn to apply to your animal. We also have another section called Quick Reads. These are quick reads taken from our social media accounts that give you small blurbs of information on a wider variety of topics. We even link the original posting in the read so you can see any media attached if applicable, or just see our residents!

With training, you need tools. We love most to provide educational tools for you. To add to that, we have found few trusted products that will help elevate your training and make it easier for you. We do not believe in coercive training tools. We also do not carry products whose purpose is gimmicky and a “quick fix” instead of actually training behaviors that last. We could be a lot richer if we provided these tools, but also would be doing a great injustice to our customers, clients, supporters, and their loved animals.
